You are welcome to the Department of Physiotherapy of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Lagos.
The Department was established by Senate on July 1, 1980. Prior to that date, specifically from September 1971, the Department operated as a unit under the Department of Paediatrics and the programme of studies in Physiotherapy led to the award of a Diploma Certificate of the University of Lagos in Physiotherapy.
With effect from July 1, 1980, however, the certificate obtained on successful completion of the course of studies in Physiotherapy was upgraded to a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc Physiotherapy). The duration of studies for the BSc Physiotherapy programme was four years. The BSc curriculum was upgraded to a 5-year programme in 2000 leading to the award of Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B. Physiotherapy). Beginning from the 2024/2025 academic session, the programme has been upgraded to a 6-year programme leading to the award of Doctor of Physiotherapy degree (DPT).
Academic Staff
We have a culture of excellence in teaching and research. The Department is made up of seasoned and erudite scholars, which include four (4) Professors, five (5) Associate Professors and two (2) Senior Lecturers, in addition to ten (10) Adjunct lecturers which include home-based colleagues and a few in the diaspora
Physical Facilities
The department is located at the Sir Olu Okeowo Centre for Physiotherapy and comprises of offices for academic and administrative staff, well-equipped lecture halls with contemporary teaching aids for all levels of study, a functional Practical Demonstration Room (PDR) and relevant conveniences for both staff and students.
Programmes
The department runs an undergraduate Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B. PT) programme which has been replaced with the Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) effective from the 2024/2025 academic session. Postgraduate programmes are offered in four different Physiotherapy Specialties and include Master of Science (MSc ) , Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Teaching and Research
Specialty-based areas of teaching and research of the academic staff include Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Neurophysiotherapy & Mental Health, Sports & Recreational Physiotherapy, Ergonomics & Occupational Health Physiotherapy, Geriatric Physiotherapy, Physiotherapy in Women Health as approved by our regulatory Board; The Medical Rehabilitation Therapist Board of Nigeria (MRTB).
In addition to these, Academic members of staff are also actively involved in contemporary areas of research such as Telephysiotherapy, Digital health and Genomics in Physiotherapy.
All the academic staff are actively involved in research with edge-cutting publications in National and International journals to their credit
