The Department of Haematology & Blood Transfusion of the College is entrenched in a rich tradition of excellence built upon the legacies of leaders that laid a firm foundation over the years. We are proud of this tradition and it is our goal today to further that reputation by remaining on the cutting edge of new developments in medical education, scientific and clinical research, and clinical care. 

The Department is strategized to focus our developmental efforts and resources on the three missions of the department: teaching, biomedical research, and clinical service. 

The educational mission of the Department continues to be to train future leaders in academic medicine. This we aim to achieve by continuously adapting our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching methods to meet all laid down standards both locally and internationally. 

The Department encourages world-class research and recognizes the limitations present in this environment towards achieving this. We thus encourage the use of local content which meets international standards towards achieving our goals of contributing significantly to the body of medical knowledge. The Haematology Department is involved in various research activities which include Sickle Cell Anaemia, Thalassemia, Haemophilia, Thrombophilia, Aplastic anaemia, Leukemia, Lymphomas, ITP, etc. The department has nine faculty members, 13 M.Sc students, and another 18 waiting to receive admission letters as well as competent administrative and laboratory staff to ensure our aims and obligations are achieved.

The Department has a well-recognized presence at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital where over 10,000 patients are seen in outpatient clinics each year. We also provide leadership for the hospital antiretroviral services programme supported by PEPFAR funding. In this programme over 22,000 Nigerians including pregnant women and children have received clinical, pharmaceutical, and laboratory services. Through this funding, we are able to establish research laboratories with the latest equipment for chemiluminescence-based assays, flow cytometers as well as COBAS ampliprep Taqman Roche platforms for quantitative assays of viruses (HBV DNA, HCV RNA, and HIV viral loads). The department provides leadership for the hospital molecular research laboratory equipped with automated DNA and RNA extraction equipment, thermocyclers, RT-PCR, gel electrophoresis equipment, and photo imagers.

The department collaborates with US partners at TH Chan Harvard School of Public Health and the Northwestern University in Chicago. With these institutions, we run NIH-funded grants. Our current grants include 4UH3HD096920-03 (Intensive Combination Approach to Roll back the Epidemic (iCARE) in Nigerian Adolescents living with HIV/AIDS) and U54CA221205 (Epigenomic Biomarkers of HIV-Associated Hepatocellular and Cervical Cancers in Nigeria).
