History of the Department

As human health needs are expanding, so also nursing development is broadening its interest and functions through the dynamic social climates created by religious ideologies, economic development, industrial revolutions and education. These changes have influenced every aspect of human development. In response, the University of Lagos asked the College of Medicine to appoint a Committee to work on the modalities of starting a  B.N.Sc Generic programme.  Consequently, the Academic Board of the College at its meeting held on Wednesday, August 5th 2009, received a report that curriculum of B.N.Sc degree has been approved by the University Senate to run for 5 years.  The working Committee made the following recommendations:

  • The programme should be domiciled as a unit in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Sciences as approved by Senate until they achieved a Departmental status
  • That first UME  intake into the programme be made during the 2009/2010 academic  session
  • That a Co-ordinator for the programme be appointed immediately

Thus the first class of eight students was admitted during the 2009/2010 academic session while for the 2010/2011 academic session, another class of twenty students were admitted into the programme. A professor of Nursing, Professor R. B. Fajemilehin of the Obafemi-Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife who was then on Sabbatical leave, was invited to guide the establishment of the programme in September 2010.  He was appointed as Co-coordinator and later was the Head of Department. The programme as a professional degree is classified and recommended to run a unit course system and the curriculum is designed to prepare competent poly-valent nurse practitioners who will use nursing process approach in providing safe acceptable, effective and efficient nursing care to meet the health needs of individuals, families and the community at large.   A resource evaluation visit to the Department was conducted by NUC in January, 2011 and approval to run only on full time mode was given.  Hence Professor R.B. Fajemilehin (Coordinator of the programme) applied for an up-grading from a Unit to a Department of Nursing Science which the University Senate approved on 27th April, 2010.  Finally the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria came on an Advisory visit to the Department in November 2011 and made recommendations towards an initial accreditation.

Academic Programme

  1. Programme Title B.N.Sc  in Nursing
  2. Programme/ Philosophy, Aims and Objectives

The Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.) degree programme is a professional polyvalent degree that aims at producing high calibre nurses with comprehensive training who shall have the greatest concern for quality care and services through the highest standards of scholarship and professional culture. Given the strategic and structural advantages of the University of Lagos, it is imperative for this institution to provide training in this area, more so as there is an obvious yearning for it. The programme is domiciled in the Faculty of Clinical Science of the College of Medicine.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department of Nursing Science programme reflects vision of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. Nursing is a profession recognized for its intentional blend of the rigorous application of scientific knowledge with the art of caring. A strong educational foundation enables nurses to conduct evidence-based practice, engage in scholarly activities, and translate knowledge in health sciences and health care to improve healthcare delivery to all human beings. By providing a diverse and global perspective and raising the professional and social conscience of our students, they will become health care leaders. The philosophy of the programme is also based on the essential purpose of nursing which is to achieve better health for individuals, families and the communities. Such nursing services as outlined in the philosophy are based on the premise that:

  1. Man is a biological, spiritual, social and psychological indivisible unit whose needs are an inherent part of his nature and therefore, is affected by factors within his environment.
  2. Health is an integral part of the overall development of man, which is influenced by socio-cultural, biological and developmental factors.
  3. Health care, with emphasis on Primary Health Care, is fundamentally dependent on the availability, accessibility and affordability of both health and socio-economic resources.
  4. Nursing is primarily concerned with human life, the quality of the health of the individual, family group or community.  Nursing is directed towards the achievement of better health and consequently as a practice profession, must be firmly based on knowledge derived from the biological, physical and behavioural sciences relevant to the understanding of human nature.
  5. Although the Nurse as a human being exists and shares the same nature and basic needs as the client (patient), the Nurse professional has acquired nursing knowledge, skills, attitudes and ethics to provide safe and effective care.
  6. The client is capable of reasoning and he possesses basic ideas, beliefs and values, which guide his actions. He is an active partner in the nursing care process and participates in crucial decision-making regarding his care and environment.

Aims and Objectives

Aims

The aim of the nursing curriculum is to prepare competent polyvalent nurse practitioners that will use the nursing process approach in providing safe, acceptable, effective and efficient health services to meet the health needs of individuals, families and the community.  The programme also aims to prepare nurse-practitioners who are capable of relating the role of health services to the broader social system and who will be engaged in life-long and self-directed learning.
