Personal Statement

I am a trained Pediatric hematologist/oncologist with special interest in sickle cell anemia and stem cell transplant. My training exposed me to the need of children with blood disorders and malignancies in my environment. Nigeria has the largest burden of sickle cell disease in the world with an attendant high morbidity and mortality. Due to my interest and the need for the right skillset, I undertook a fellowship at Birmingham Children Hospital, Birmingham, United Kingdom in Hematology/Stem Cell Transplant.

Since completing this programme, I have been able to impact the Department of Paediatrics at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), by improving protocols and practices that have seen to the development of a comprehensive sickle cell program at my home institution resulting in improvement in overall care and survival amongst children with sickle cell anemia. I am also involved in the care of children with cancers and we are currently involved with the molecular characterizations of these common cancers.

I was a recipient of a grant writing and research ethics course at the Institute of Global Health of the Northwestern University. This program exposed me to the proper ethics of conducting research in human subjects with emphasis on clinical trials and systematic reviews, while improving my skills in sourcing for intramural and extramural funding.

Most recently, I have noticed the proliferation of a cottage industry for transplant for children with sickle cell anemia residing in low resource settings like Nigeria. Thus, I started a post-transplant clinic focused on improving the care for these population of patients.

My team and I are currently involved in clinical trials for children, adolescents and adults with sickle cell anaemia. We are part of a global movement to improve the quality of life of these individuals
