A. Personal
Statement
As a mid-career neurologist, I have cultivated a passion
for bridging the gaps in knowledge regarding clinical and pathogenetic
mechanisms of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria, specifically the
neurodegenerative disorders through engaging in internationally visible
research and collaborations. I am an academic researcher and clinical
neurologist with insights into the acute need to bolster neurosciences
education (basic and clinical) within Nigeria and Africa. I am committed towards
empowering younger physicians with knowledge in the clinical neurosciences, not
only to improve early recognition, diagnosis, care/management and above all,
prevention of these diseases in our setting, but also to inspire interest, and
mentor the next generation of neuroscientists. My research interests focus on
the clinical profile and genetics of Parkinson disease, other movement
disorders and neurodegenerative dementias in Nigerians and black Africans. Ultimately,
through national, regional and international collaborations, the goal is for research
output to translate into sustainable policies that improve neurology education,
facilitate research in basic and clinical neurosciences, and advances access of
persons with movement disorders to care.
