WELCOME TO DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE
Department of Medicine was among the foundation Departments of the College of Medicine which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1962. The Department pursues and emphasizes the teaching of medicine, through sound clinical skills backed by an equally sound theoretical knowledge in the training of Students of Medicine. The primary duties of the Department are teaching, research and service to the community. Many of the Lecturers in the Department are Honorary Consultants to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Lagos.
The Department consists of eleven sub-specialty units viz:- Cardiology, Dermatology and Venerelogy, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Clinical Haematology and Medical Oncology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology and Emergency Medicine. There are also newly created units of Infectious diseases and intensive care. Undergraduate Professional Programme The Department primarily trains Medical and Dental students, Pharmacy Students and other Para-medical students rotate through, he Department as part of their training. The Department is also involved in the teaching and training of Student Nurses and Student Midwives. Medical Students have three postings in the Department
The major ones – Junior Posting (2 months) and Senior Posting (3 months) is preceded by two short introductory clinical postings termed “Basic Therapeutic Skills and Basic Clinical skills”
Admission into the undergraduate clinical programme is based on a successful completion of the pre-clinical basic medical science course. At the end of the posting in Medicine, the student should:-
a. have attained an international acceptable standard of training in clinical medicine, b. systematically be able to solve clinical problems through good history taking physical examination and performance of simple laboratory tests, and c. be able to synthesize clinical and laboratory findings to reach a diagnosis and list diagnosis and list differential diagnosis and initiate a plan of action. This clinical skill acquisition is made to be accompanied by a sound theoretical knowledge of medicine.
The need for continuing medical education, how to access information health care and the concept of team and holistic approach to dealing with medical problems are given appropriate emphasis during the posting in medicine.
In its pursuit for excellence in medical care, the Department has a departmental library, with journals and textbooks.
Bachelor of Nursing Science is to prepare competent practitioners that will use nursing process approach in providing safe, acceptable, effective and affordable health services to meet the health needs of individuals, families and the community. To produce competent professionals with sound academic background, to train manpower who, among other abilities have professional qualification and skills that equip them for senior positions in the health care field. Implement necessary nursing actions to minimize individual problems through holistic and client/family centered approach in homes, community and health care institutions.
The Department in collaboration with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, trains Doctors for the fellowship examination of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians. The products of these Fellowship programmes now constitutes the bulk of Medical Teachers in the Country. The Department, in collaboration with the University of Lagos Consultancy Services and other bodies, regularly organizes continuing professional improvement training courses for Nurses, Doctors and other health care professionals.
