Welcome To The Department Of Surgery

The Department of Surgery, University of Lagos Medical School was founded in 1962. The pioneer of the University of Lagos Medical School, Professor Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas was the founder and first Head of the Department of Surgery. This eminent surgeon, great mentor and skilled administrator, recruited the first generation of surgeons in the Department, which included Professor Akin Adesola and Professor Ade Elebute. The first generation of academic members of staff of the Department, employed between 1962 and 1982 contributed to the production of excellent of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) graduates for 5 decades.the employment of second and third generation surgeons started in 1990. They the present academic members of staff are consultants in the Department. The Department of Surgery, CMUL and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (luth) continue to play a key role in the development of surgical manpower in Nigeria. The first gastrointestinal endoscopy in West African sub-region was performed by the Surgical Gastroenterology Unit of the department in 1974. The first endoscopy retrograde cholangio- pancreatography in Nigeria was also performed by the same unit in 1986. Another milestone in the department was the performance of renal transplantation by the urology unit in 2011. The practice of Surgery has evolved from each performing all types of surgery to subspecialty in practice.  
The Department of Surgery, CMUL operates a semi-autonomous unit system in which faculty members, based on their areas of subspecialty interests, are grouped into Units (8) as follows: General Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Orthopaedic & trauma Surgery, Urology, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, Burns & Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery and Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), respectively. There are minimum of 2 lecturers  of the CMUL in each Unit. They are also as Honorary Consultants to LUTH enaling them to Perform the two intertwined roles of teaching and provision of clinical services to patients.

During six-week in the 3rd and 4th year of their training Medical and Dental students are taught the principles of resuscitation in general and cardiopulmonary resuscitations in particular, principles of Anaesthesia with emphasis on regional techniques. The teaching process include lectures, tutorials, seminars, films, demonstrations on simulators and active participation in operative Anaesthesia. Students are encouraged to use the self-instructional packages and aids outside school hours.

Events and relevant activities in the Department

The Department of Surgery, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos has continued in her tradition of excellence in all her endeavours of research, training of medical students and rendering of clinical services through the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.  Some of the events and relevant activities are:  

  • National Association of Urological Surgeons (NAUS) conference: The department through the Urology unit successfully hosted this conference.  The conference brought all Urological surgeons in the country together to discuss cutting edge advances in this subspecialty and was well attended and adjudged hugely successful.
  • Pan African Paediatric Surgery Association (PAPSA): This conference held at the Golden Tulip hotel in Festac in September 2016 with a preconference workshop at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.  The conference attracted paediatric surgeons from all over the world including United States, United Kingdom, Japan etc and from the whole of Africa. 
  • General Surgery Laparoscopic Course: The General Surgery Unit of the department hosted laparoscopic surgeons across Lagos in March 2017 and several issues on development and advancement of this new frontier in our local setting were discussed.
  • Several members of the department continue to receive international awards and recognition. Dr Ademuyiwa A O. (Associate Professor of Paediatric Surgery) and Dr Ojewola R.W. (Lecturer I in Urology) recently received the highly prestigious Commonwealth Travel Fellowship sponsored by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) and the Department for International Development (DFID) which allowed them to train in the United Kingdom for 6 months.  Dr Ademuyiwa was at the King’s College Hospital, London where he trained in laparoscopic paediatric surgery while Dr Ojewola was at the Royal Free London where he trained in upper tract endourology.
  • In addition, several of the academic staff have been honoured by the American College of Surgeons Fellowship which is the highest honour granted by this body. This highly competitive award confers the letters ‘FACS’ which is a currency of international reputation as a surgeon and a highly rated peer recognition award.  Among those who have been awarded in the last few years include Prof O. A. Atoyebi FACS, Prof. A.A. Adesanya FACS, Dr E.A Jeje FACS, Dr A.O. Ademuyiwa FACS, Dr O. B. Bankole FACS, Dr O.A. Elebute FACS, and Dr Olusoji FACS.
